A Tale of “X” Gamers – Space Marines 001.

First things first, let me introduce myself. My name is Cristiano and I live in Poços de Caldas in the south of the Minas Gerais state in Brazil, a.k.a “Normal“ for a good while now. I’m 34, just married, and began in the hobby of miniature painting around the 1990’s, painting military kits (poorly) and as soon as I began playing RPGs I had my first contact with a few lead miniatures and painted many of them. After then, I had a break from painting for quite a few years due to college, unemployment working, real life in the end. In 2008 I first met Warhammer 40000 in the last edition of the EIRPG at the Games Workshop stand. I sat in a painting table around there and the old love for assembling and painting miniatures came back with full power.

 

After then it is history. I began with two small Space Marine and Tyranid armies (which never saw the sunlight by the way) but stayed with the Orks. Since then I’ve been practicing regularly my painting skills and I’m always learning something new. This already gave me some mentions and a few real prizes in painting competitions, bothe online and real ones, with my last achievement being the Best Painted Army prize in the Fork of Mork III tournament, in November 2011, which also granted me the Overall Champion title.

 

And once again I face the challenge of painting a whole army with a time limit, stimulated by the new edition of Warhammer 40k.

 

 

Right, so, for the challenge, I decided to build a new army list, which will be my guideline for the project, and also will expand my Space Marines army. New book, new rules; the foremost part of the challenge is already concluded: reading the new rulebook. It took me more time than I expected due to lack of time, and this will be a real factor from now on. I also informed myself regarding the rules by reading comments around the net in forums.

 

With that in hand, I built an army list that combines what I think could give a good match, and also as more painting opportunities and maybe even conversions. I have always been more of a painter than gamer, and it wasn’t different now. I also took advantage of the new rules to include two flyers and a fortification. The list ended with 12 units, an average of 1 unit per month until the conclusion of the project, and I really hope it should be enough. This list is by no way definitive; it might be altered as I see fit or because of any unexpected event.

And of course this won’t stop me from continuing with my other projects, as time and inspiration comes. The only difference is that I will prioritize the list presented here.

 

By initiating a new list, it is interesting to schedule assembling/painting, to program what will be bought first, with a cost management in mind. Here I point the importance in taking advantage of promotions, second hand items, spare bits from previous projects, friends that can bring you stuff and whatever could be in hand to lower costs. Based in this, I availed myself of a stock clearance to buy two tactical squads for R$50,00 each (around US$24,00). A great deal, considering the high costs we face in Brazil to buy hobby stuff, not mentioning the (absurd!) tax values. I included in the initial cost a box of devastators, with a cost of R$65,00, including shipping and taxes. Initial investment of R$165,00 because the two tactical I bought, otherwise it should have been only one. This devastator box will be used to build the devastator unit, and supply my tactical squads with heavy weapons. This value surpasses the goal of R$150,00 per month, but the value I got with the two tactical will be compensated later.

 

There is no “right” order you should paint you models in. I believe the main criteria is availability, as is the will to assemble that specific unit at a given moment. For my first squad, I used the tactical squad box I bought, the multi-melta from the devastator box and a few spare bits I had. For those of you that still don’t have a good supply of bits, this is no problem. In my case, I could start with another unit and wait for the bits that surely will gather along the project, or could have bought them directly or simply just traded them with friends or in online forums.

 

And for you that are just beginning, there are several online articles with tips of what to buy initially, but I can say that it doesn’t need to be expensive. In Brazil we have many cheap alternatives for knives, clippers, brushes, tools and glues, and for those of you that are reading this from other countries, I believe this is also true, although I can’t state what is better or cheaper; you’ll need to search for yourself.

 

And for you that are starting now, you don’t have to buy every single color. Make a list of what you’re sure you’ll need, and as you evolve, you may buy whatever else is necessary. In my first unit, I assembled the models with Testors’ plastic glue (easier to find in Brazil than others in hobby stores) and super bonder; as primer I used Colorgin matte black spray; for the armor I used Turquoise Blue, Lunar Grey for shoulder pads (both from the Acrilex range). Black wash for shades, Brown for holsters (from the Decorfix range), citadel’s Shinning Gold for golden parts, Boltgun Metal and Necron Compound for metal areas and metallic drybrush. For the bases common white glue and washed and sieved beach sand. I also use garden sand (grinded colored stone, with a cost of R$1,50 for about 1 Kg, enough for hundreds of models.

 

The Tallorn Tactical Squad is responsible for searching and destroying enemy heavy vehicles, and also more powerful creatures. Sargent Tallorn is a veteran from many battles, and today has many bionic implants that replaced some of his body parts from former heavy injuries, the most notable being the plate that replaced half his skull lost in a plasma wound, and his power fist that is not just a worn weapon, but is actually his arm and hand. Amongst the squad´s most noticeable deeds are the destruction of the Chaos Warhound Titan “Malefactor” and the death of Warboss Ganaruk by Sgt. Tallorn own hands.

E aí pessoal!

 

Bom, primeiramente, algumas apresentações. Meu nome é Cristiano, moro em Poços de Caldas, no sul de Minas Gerais, sou mais conhecido como “Normal” desde muitos anos já. Em 2008 conheci o Warhammer 40.000 na última edição do EIRPG, no stand da Games Workshop. Sentei em uma mesa de pintura que havia lá e a antiga paixão de montar e pintar miniaturas voltou com tudo.

 

Depois é história. Comecei com um pequeno exército de Space Marines e Tyranids (que nunca viram tinta) e peguei mais firme com Orks. Desde então tenho praticado regularmente minhas habilidades em pintura, e cada vez mais experimento e aprendo algo novo. Isso já me rendeu algumas menções e uns poucos prêmios reais em competições de pintura, online e reais, sendo minha última conquista a nomeação para Melhor Exército Pintado durante o torneio Fork of Mork III, em novembro de 2011, que me ajudou a levar também a nomeação de Campeão Geral.

 

E venho mais uma vez encarar o desafio de montar um exército em um prazo definido, com o estímulo de uma nova edição do jogo Warhammer 40K.

 

Certo, então para o desafio, resolvi criar uma nova lista, que servirá como a base e guia para o projeto, e também como expansão para o meu exército atual de Space Marines. Livro novo, regras novas; a primeira parte do desafio já está concluída, que foi ler o novo livro de regras. Levei muito mais tempo do que gostaria por pura e simples falta de tempo, que, aliás, será um fator importante a se considerar daqui para frente. Aproveitei também para me informar mais a respeito das regras lendo comentários e opiniões em fóruns pela internet.

 

De posse disso, montei uma lista que combina o que eu acho que pode fornecer um bom jogo, assim como mais oportunidades de pintura e quem sabe até conversões. Sempre fui mais pintor do que jogador, então não podia ser diferente agora. Aproveitei também as novas regras para incluir dois veículos voadores e uma fortificação. A lista terminou com 12 unidades diferentes, o que me dá em média uma unidade por mês para concluir, o que espero realmente que seja o suficiente. Essa lista de maneira alguma é definitiva; pode ser alterada conforme eu achar necessário ou por algum imprevisto. Segue a lista:

E é claro que isso não vai me impedir de continuar tocando paralelamente outros projetos, conforme vier inspiração e tempo. A única diferença é que haverá prioridade para a lista aqui apresentada.

 

Ao se iniciar uma nova lista, é interessante fazer uma previsão de montagem/pintura, para saber o que será adquirido primeiro, com a intenção de se fazer um planejamento de gastos. Aqui saliento a importância de se aproveitar promoções, itens usados, bits sobressalentes de projetos anteriores, amigos que fazem viagem ao exterior e com disposição pra trazer muamba; e o que mais vier à mão. Com base nisso, aproveitei uma promoção de queima de estoque numa loja online nacional e comprei dois tactical squad por 50 reais cada. Uma bagatela, considerando os custos que normalmente temos para comprar material daqui do Brasil, sem contar o custo extra dos (absurdos) impostos. Incluí no custo inicial uma caixa de Devastators, que custou R$65,00, já considerando o frete e o imposto. O investimento inicial ficou em R$165,00, mas isso por conta de ter aproveitado a promoção, caso contrário seria apenas o valor de um tático. Essa caixa de Devastators será usada para montar os devastators propriamente ditos, assim como fornecer as armas pesadas para alguns táticos. Esse valor inicial ultrapassa um pouco o valor que quero utilizar todo mês, de R$150,00, mas o valor promocional conseguido nos táticos será compensando posteriormente.

 

Não há uma obrigatoriedade na ordem em que se deve montar e pintar as unidades. O critério principal eu creio ser a disponibilidade, assim como a vontade de montar aquela unidade no momento. Para o primeiro esquadrão utilizei uma caixa de Tactical Squad, o multi melta da caixa de devastators e alguns bits que eu tinha sobressalentes. Para você que ainda não tem um bom suprimento de bits, isso não é problema. No meu caso, eu poderia ter começado com outra unidade, e esperar ter os bits que com certeza se acumularão ao longo do projeto, ou ainda poderia ter comprado os bits separadamente ou ainda ter simplesmente trocado com alguém, sempre é possível conseguir alguma coisa com os amigos ou em fóruns.

 

E para você que ainda está iniciando, há vários artigos online com dicas do que comprar inicialmente, mas posso adiantar que o investimento não precisa ser caro. No Brasil temos várias alternativas baratas que não devem em nada aos produtos importados, como estiletes, alicates, pincéis, outras ferramentas e colas. No quesito tintas, há quem só use as importadas, já que de fato são melhores do que as nacionais, mas as opções nacionais não são tão ruins como parecem (exceto os pigmentos metálicos; se puder, invista somente nos importados). Por sinal, eu utilizo muito tintas nacionais, simplesmente pela praticidade de comprar fácil e pelo preço. Nem todas as cores nacionais são boas, e há variação em tons entre as marcas, mas atendo-se sempre às mesmas, não há problemas. Meus pincéis são os de pelo tipo Toray tamanho 0 e 00 da Condor, alguns de pelo de orelha de boi para trabalhos mais grosseiros como basecoats e drybrush e um Fine Detail Brush da Citadel.

 

Você que vai começar agora, não precisa comprar todas as cores imagináveis. Faça uma lista do que tem certeza que vai precisar, e conforme for evoluindo , compre o que achar necessário. Na minha primeira unidade, para montar usei cola plástica da Testors (que é mais facilmente encontrada no Brasil em lojas de modelismo) e super bonder; como primer, usei spray preto fosco Colorgin, como base na armadura Azul Turquesa, Cinza Lunar nas ombreiras (ambos Acrilex). Para as sombras, Preto bem diluído (um wash), Marrom nas bolsas e coldres (todos Decorfix), as partes douradas são o Shining Gold, as metálicas são Bolgun Metal e Necron Compound para os drybrushes (Citadel). Para a base usei cola branca escolar e areia de praia lavada e peneirada. Também uso muito areia ornamental (pedra moída e colorida, na verdade), que custa R$1,50 e vem em pacotes de 1Kg, mais do que suficiente para centenas de miniaturas.

 

O esquadrão tático Tallorn é responsável por buscar e destruir veículos pesados, assim como criaturas mais poderosas. O sargento Tallorn é um veterano de muitas batalhas, e hoje possui muitos implantes biônicos para que repusessem ferimentos graves, sendo o mais notório a placa que substituiu metade de seu crânio perdido em um ferimento de plasma e seu Punho, que não é apenas uma arma empunhada, é na verdade seu braço e mão.  Entre os feitos mais notáveis do esquadrão estão a destruição do Titã Warhound do Chaos “Malefactor” e a morte do Warboss Ganaruk pelas mãos do sargento Tallorn.
