A Tale of “X” Gamers – Chaos Space Marines 001.

As you’ve probably noticed we had quite a few posts over the month of October from the “A Tale of X Gamers” project. As I explained on my introductory post about it, this was an old idea that I’m happy to see becoming reality thanks to the willingness of the participants to whom I’m deeply thankful.

 

One of the nice things of this project is that I also became a reader of the blog, with the privilege of being able to read the texts before anyone else, but a reader nonetheless. So yesterday as I finished editing one of the last texts which will be published this month I caught myself wanting to see what’s coming next from the participants, like how they’ll develop their army lists, whether or not they’ll include my favorite units from their Codexes and so on and so forth. I can say I’m definitely hooked by now and that I can’t wait to see what lies ahead.

 

Another nice thing about the project is that, with the exception of article deadlines, budget and number of points we’ll need to collect for our armies, nothing else was arranged between the participants and still the pool of participants and armies couldn’t be more eclectic, illustrating how varied our approached to the hobby can be and that even when utilizing the same Codex to build an army the end results can be very different (like the armies being built by Caio and Montagna with the Grey Knights Codex for instance).

 

 

As it couldn’t be different I’m also participating on the project and as the eight pointed star which adorns this article shows I’ve decided to throw myself with the CHAOS lot and build me a Chaos Space Marine (CSM) Army. Yes, having a new CSM Codex released soon has played a part in my decision but not because I think they’ll be the new “uber” Codex of the game, far from that.

 

The first reason behind that choice is the “A Tale of X Gamers” project itself. As the goal here is to build a new army with the rules of 6^th edition in mind I thought building an army with the first Codex released for it would be even more fitting. I’ve also been flirting with the CSM for a good while now. Over the years I’m in the hobby I’ve bought a few CSM pieces wanting to use them in a small army, not only because I liked how they look but also because CSM have played such a pivotal role in defining the Warhammer 40.000 universe as it exists today.

 

My problem has been deciding which legion to portray as I’m very fond of quite a few of them. There’s no way one can read the “Storm of Iron” novel without becoming a fan of Honsou and the Iron Warriors, or how can one not enjoy the tragic story of Night Haunter and his Night Lords, and as of late I’m enjoying reading about Horus and his Luna Wolves in the “Horus Rising” book and suffering silently as the seeds of heresy are really sown before my eyes. Then there’s another two old favorites: Nurgle and his Death Guard and Khorne and his berserkers from the World Eaters! Oh! I forgot to mention Lorgar and his Word Bearers!

 

There’s no way I can choose one over another so what I’ve been thinking about is building a core army for the purpose of the project, but one I can add units from other legions and expand in the future. Doing some research on the 40K Wiki Eric has pointed us to I believe I’ll end up choosing the Word Bearers and my core force, not only because they have maintained a lot of their old legion structure, but also because as they worship the whole CHAOS pantheon that gives me the chance of using units from other legions (who could be allies in that given occasion).

 

Having made that decision I’m now left with the practical aspects of it concerning the “A Tale of X Games” project. As I write this the Codex CSM hasn’t been released so I’ve decided to invest this month’s budget in purchasing the new 6^th edition Rulebook. I believe it’s important to have one, not only to familiarize yourself with the new rules and study them, but also as a source of background literature that can inspire and give you ideas of which army to build.

 

That may sound silly and redundant to point out but you’d be surprised with how many people not only do not own their copy of the rule set but have also never even read it.

 

I have bought my book from Games-Workshop’s online store as that’s one of the few places we can buy their stuff from these days. I bought from GW UK and my purchased totaled £55.00 (£45.00 from the book and a £10.00 shipping fee). I didn’t pay any import duties on it as books and other printed material are exempt of taxes in Brazil. That amount did go over our initial 50-75 dollar budget but I’ll compensate that in upcoming months.

 

And I guess that’s it from me this month. I hope to have the new CSM Codex with me next month and then I’ll probably go over which units I intend to include on my army list and how I go about building it. I’ll also read a bit the rules of 6^th edition so I can comment on them as well.

Bom, vocês já devem ter percebido a esta altura que o blog anda movimentado com os artigos do projeto “Um Conto de X Jogadores” (ou “A Tale of X Gamers” em inglês). Como expliquei no post introdutório desse projeto essa era uma ideia antiga que tenho a felicidade de ver acontecer graças à boa vontade dos demais participantes aos quais eu não poderia ser mais grato então, de novo, muito obrigado a todos vocês que toparam participar comigo dessa iniciativa.

 

O legal desse projeto é que me tornei leitor do blog assim como vocês, com o privilégio de poder ler antes os textos dos participantes, mas ainda assim um leitor, e ontem, ao terminar de editar o último texto que vai ao ar neste mês me peguei, como qualquer leitor fisgado, ansioso em ver os próximos capítulos desse conto em andamento para descobrir como cada participante vai desenvolver seu exército, se incluirão minhas unidades favoritas dos Codex que eles escolheram e por ai vai. Acredito que essa será uma jornada bastante instigante.

 

Outra coisa legal é que, com exceção dos prazos dos artigos, orçamento e número de pontos que comporão os exércitos nada mais foi combinado entre os participantes e ainda assim o esse mix e os exércitos de cada um deles não poderia ser mais eclético, ilustrando o quão variadas podem ser as formas de abordar nosso hobby, mesmo quando se utiliza um mesmo Codex para construção de um exército (como ilustram exemplarmente os dois exércitos do projeto que tem como base o Codex Grey Knights feitos pelo Caio e pelo Montagna).

 

Como não poderia deixar de ser eu também estou participando do projeto, e a estrela de oito pontas lá em cima deixa clara minha escolha de exército não? Dessa vez resolvi atender ao chamado do CHAOS e vou tentar terminar meu primeiro army de vilões do 41º milênio.

 

Nesse momento muito pouca coisa foi decidida por mim em relação ao exército com exceção de ter me decidido por um army de Chaos Space Marines (CSM). Sim, o lançamento de um novo Codex tem sim influência nessa decisão. Já que a ideia por trás do projeto era fazer um army tendo como base a mais recente edição do Warhammer 40.000 achei que nada mais justo que fazê-lo usando o primeiro Codex lançado para essa nova versão do jogo.

 

No entanto essa escolha tem muito pouco a ver com o potencial do novo Codex em jogo, já que a decisão pelo Codex CSM já foi tomada antes de seu efetivo lançamento. Na verdade meu flerte com esse army é antigo. Ao longo dos anos no hobby comprei algumas peças dos CSM querendo, um dia, fazer um pequeno army deles, já que me amarro no background do jogo e esses caras foram pivotais ao definir o atual “status quo” do universo do jogo, e, ao colocar em pratica a ideia do “Conto de X Jogadores”, nada mais justo que dar uma chance a esse army do qual eu tanto gosto.

 

Contudo, é bem nesse “tanto gosto” que reside meu atual dilema. Eu gosto MUITO de várias legiões dos CSM e de diferentes aspectos de cada uma. Não dá pra não se amarrar em Honsou e nos Iron Warriors após ter lido o livro “Storm of Iron”, o mesmo vale pros Night Lords e seu amargurado primarca o Night Haunter, também ando amarradaço na Black Legion (já que ando lendo o “Horus Rising” primeiro livro da série sobre a Heresia de Horus) e ainda temos duas antigas paixões na forma de Nurgle e seus seguidores da Death Guard e Khorne e seus berserkers dos World Eaters. É muita coisa pra conciliar em um só projeto não? Ah! E ainda me esqueci de mencionar Lorgar e seus Word Bearers os traidores originais!

 

No fim das contas ando pensando em fazer para o projeto um “core army”, ou seja, um exército principal ao qual eu possa adicionar novas unidades no futuro na forma de warbands de outras legiões. Pesquisando um pouco o site sobre 40K indicado pelo Eric (40K Wiki)acho que vou acabar optando pelos Word Bearers mesmo, já que eles foram um dos poucos traidores que mantiveram a estrutura anterior da Legião, além do que, como veneram o panteão do CHAOS em sua totalidade não é difícil justificar a inclusão de unidades das outras legiões que eu curto.

 

Tomada essa decisão restam os aspectos práticos em relação ao projeto. Como no momento em que escrevo este artigo o Codex CSM ainda não foi lançado decidi investir o budget do mês na compra de um livro de regras do Warhammer 40.000. Acho imprescindível que qualquer jogador possua seu livro, não só para poder ler, estudar e aprender as regras do jogo, mas também como fonte de literatura sobre o universo do jogo e inspiração para criar seu exército.

 

Pode parecer bobagem destacar isso, mas você ficaria surpreso com o número de jogadores que sequer leram o livro de regras.

 

Comprei meu livro diretamente na loja online da Games-Workshop e com os custos de postagem a compra totalizou £55.00 (£45.00 do livro e £10.00 de postagem) o que convertido em reais ficou em torno de R$ 165,00. Não houve incidência de taxas sobre essa encomenda uma vez que no Brasil material impresso como livros, revistas e periódicos são isentos de taxação (mas para que isso ocorra é importante que a encomenda contenha somente livros e seja discriminada como tal na nota). Vou tentar compensar o estouro no orçamento nos meses seguintes.

 

No mais é isso. Mês que vem já devo estar com o Codex CSM em mãos e ai acho que posso abordar minha construção da lista bem como fazer alguns comentários sobre o que mudou nas regras da 6ª edição.
