Hello Reader!

 

Playing miniature games is always our escuse to meet, so, as usual, with Marcos coming to visit Brazil it was high time we organized something to get together with our friends in Sao Paulo and play a couple games.

 

Last time we had Marcos around we held the 1st PAPOCON, the first meeting from the do Papo de Mesa Podcast (the podcast me and Marcos host) held at the “Clube Paulista de Wargames” (the Sao Paulo wargaming club), so it was natural to think about holding the 2nd PAPOCON this time… but the hard truth is that the podcast isn’t being published as often as we’d like as we’re struggling to find the time to record and edit new episodes, so calling this meeting a PAPOCON was almost like salting our own wounds .

Olá Leitor!

 

Jogar bonequinhos é sempre a desculpa que usamos para nos encontrar, então, como de costume, com uma nova visita do “Ultra”Marcos ao Brasil é claro que tínhamos que organizar algo para nos reunirmos.

 

Da última vez rolou a 1ª PAPOCON, o primeiro encontro do Papo de Mesa Podcast (programa do qual somos hosts) sediado lá no Clube Paulista de Wargames, então era natural que tivéssemos a 2ª PAPOCON… mas a verdade é que o Papo de Mesa Podcast anda estacionado diante da falta de tempo para editar e gravar novos episódios, então chamar esse encontro de PAPOCON parecia meio despropositado.

Ele se movia determinada e silenciosamente em direção ao velho pórtico engastado na colina. As velhas hastes de metal do qual eram feitas o portão haviam há muito sido corroídas pela ação do tempo, esfacelando-se com a ferrugem e tornando-o sem serventia, motivo pelo qual o portão jazia agora semiaberto, testemunha silenciosa e impotente das idas e vindas da criatura que habitava os túneis mais além, dos quais um dia fora guardião.

 

Os túneis fantasmagóricos sob o velho forte eram evitados por todos, e mesmo aqueles a seu serviço evitavam transitar por ali, pois, ainda que não soubessem a exata natureza da criatura que vivia aqui, eles, os serviçais, sempre sentiram que os túneis eram o domínio de algo maligno, algo que predava tanto homens quanto outras criaturas da escuridão.

 

Qualquer outra pessoa provavelmente se perderia no labirinto de passagens que recortavam a colina sob a qual se assentava há séculos o velho forte de propriedade de sua família. Os aldeões da região especulavam que as passagens e túneis se estenderiam até as bordas de suas terras, enquanto outros atestavam de forma veemente que uma pessoa poderia ir de um lado ao outro das Colinas Uivantes sem jamais ver a luz do dia empregando os túneis. Ele sabia que as passagens não iam tão longe. Tendo caminhado ele mesmo incontáveis vezes por cada um dos túneis ao longo dos últimos séculos, ele conhecia cada centímetro de cada tune, afinal de contas Ele era o mestre aqui.

He moved silently and purposefully towards the gated entrance on the hill. The old metal rods having long been corroded by the action of time, prevented the gate from doing its service and so it laid ajar.

 

The eerie tunnels beneath the old fort were shunned by all,  for even if those under his service didn’t know what laired here they had always felt the tunnels were the abode of something evil. Something which preyed on men and creature alike.

 

Others would probably get lost in that maze which crisscrossed the hill the fort laid upon, reaching, some said, the very borders of his domains. Others believed you could cross from one end of the Howling Hills to the other without ever seeing the light of day. He knew they didn’t stretch that far, having scoured the very same tunnels for centuries, he knew every inch of every tunnel. He was the master here after all.

This is a quick post Just to let my readers know we have published a new episode of the “Papo de Mesa Podcast”, the Brazilian podcast about wargames, board games miniature painting and collecting and other “nerdy” topics.

 

This week’s episode is about the 1^st PAPOCON, the first event/encounter promoted by the “Papo de Mesa Podcast” in order to meet and game with friends and listeners of the show (we did write about it here on the blog the other day).

Uma das coisas legais que fiz relacionadas ao hobby no ano que passou foi ter ido visitar o Clube Paulista de Wargames por ocasião da 1ª Papo de Mesa CON (ou PAPOCON como eu gosto de chamar o encontro).

 

“Como assim? Que diabos foi essa PAPOCON e porque eu não fiquei sabendo dela?” Consigo ouvir alguns de vocês perguntando, sem entender que conversa é essa de PAPOCON e tentando lembrar se você ouviu falar desse evento ou não. Deixa eu contar essa história do começo.

One of the great hobby related things I did last year was attending the first “Papo de Mesa CON” (or simply PAPOCON as I like to call it) in Sao Paulo/Brazil.

 

You may be wondering now what am I talking about as I had never mentioned it here and I do tend to give my readers fair notice about any events I’ll attend in case any of you guys want to join in the fun. If you read this blog regularly you know by now that I’ve started hosting and producing a podcast show with my good friend “Ultra”Marcos (from the “Chumbo, Plastico, Tinta & Pincel” blog) called “Papo de Mesa Podcast” (which would roughly translate as “Tabletop Talk” in the English language), a show produced in Portuguese language (so it might not be of interest to some of my English readers) thus aimed at the gaming communities in Brazil and other Portuguese speaking countries given that very little hobby content is available in our native language.

Another quick post today letting you know we’ve published the first part of our fifth episode of the Papo de Mesa Podcast.

 

Again this is a Portuguese spoken podcast but if you speak the language I couldn’t recommend it more. This time around the hosts welcome guests from five Brazilian wargaming clubs to discuss the incipient club phenomenon in Brazil.

Hello Reader.

If you live abroad you probably know a couple of clubs devoted to gaming right? From what I understand in some foreign countries the associative spirit is encouraged from an early age, starting in schools which promote many “interest clubs” ranging from book clubs, debate clubs and math teams to varied hobby clubs and gaming clubs.

It’s no secret that clubs have a great social aspect not only promoting the interaction between members, and the opportunity to exercise their common interest, but also being a reassuring factor to members showing that no matter how “weird” your hobby/personal interest may be, there’s others out there who share your passion, even if it’s sock sniffing (ok, there might not be clubs around for THAT!).

Well, for some reason I can’t fathom clubs are not that common in Brazil. We do have tennis clubs pretty much everywhere (go figure right? Every small town I’ve lived in for the last 8 years had one) with their inevitable tennis courts and swimming pools, and we do have some schools which encourage its students to form student councils but the hobby clubs are almost non-existent in schools.

So it should come as no surprise to you that gaming clubs are a recent innovation in the hobby scenario in Brazil but fortunately more and more wargamers around the country are feeling the need to associate and clubs are appearing all over the country. We went from a single club scenario, the now extinct “Martelo de Guerra” (“Warhammer” in English) in Rio de Janeiro, to a multi-club one in the space of a few years.
