Yes, I know… let me save some face and skip the apologies for not updating recently and get straight into today’s post, which for you English speaking Reader is, unfortunately, another apology.

 

So let me get that out of the way: I apologize in advance for making today’s video content only available in the languages it was recorded in (Portuguese and Spanish) but the video was not only very long (meaning a lot of extra time to work the subtitles in it) but also because my grasp on the Spanish language isn’t great, certainly not nearly good enough for me to translate accurately what was being said by our “maestro”.

Painting course with Fernando Ruiz – A review.

 

Hi there Reader.

 

Some of the most frequent things I get asked these days by my friends are about the painting course with Fernando Ruiz I participated in back in may 2012. People want to know how it was, if I enjoyed it, what was taught on it and a lot more, but, in order not to be unfair as I came back with mixed feelings about it I opted to digest the course a bit before talking about it.

 

Well, I’ve reflected a lot on it by now and decided to talk about my impressions on the painting course today. Instead of beating around the bush I’ll say what I think about it straight ahead and then I’ll justify my opinions: I found the course incredible, and an unique opportunity for any miniature painting enthusiast, however, I was a quite frustrated by it and had I known more about it before enrolling I might have chosen not to participate on it.

 

Sounds confusing? Allow me to explain myself.

You might know by now that I live in Brazil. Yes, there’s more to Brazil than what google shows, there’s even miniature wargaming, go figure. But I digress.

 

As I’ve mentioned a couple of times in other articles here on the blog, our gaming community is scattered all over the country, with bigger pockets of players in the bigger cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, but we really have people spread all over. Some of them live in small cities (which English native speakers would call towns or even villages) and I happen to be one of them.

 

This is where I currently live. So having no gaming partners around it should come as no surprise to you reader that my focus in the hobby lies in painting miniatures. Over the years I have strived to learn and improve my painting skills and even though I’ve managed to paint a good quality tabletop miniature I do struggle when it comes to mastering the more advanced techniques in miniature painting.

 

So when a fellow member of the Warhammer Brasil forum (Fabricio Fay from the Los Figureros blog) announced he was bringing none other than Fernando Ruiz Ceano to minister a two day painting course, something which never happened before here, I jumped at the chance to learn from one of the Spanish masters.

 

The course will happen in the city Porto Alegre on the 5^th and 6^th of May 2012 and I couldn’t be more excited about it. Hope to learn a lot and hopefully that will be another turning point for my painting skills.

 

I’ll try to take photographs at the course and hopefully will share a review with you guys when I return.

Se você é leitor do blog há algum tempo ou acompanha o fórum Warhammer Brasil, onde sou bastante ativo, já deve ter percebido que o meu foco no hobby é muito maior na pintura das miniaturas do no que lado estratégico da coisa.

 

Não que não me interesse por esse aspecto do hobby, longe disso, mas morando onde eu moro não tenho como me dedicar tanto aos jogos tanto como gostaria. Lembro até hoje um comentário feito pelo Fabrício “Biço” sobre minhas miniaturas quando nos conhecemos pessoalmente, por ocasião do primeiro TV/TI em que pude ir: “Também morando no mato e sem mais o que fazer tinha mais é que pintar miniaturas mesmo!”. Se essas não foram as exatas palavras dele foi algo muito parecido.

 

Fato é que meu interesse pelo hobby surgiu primeiro pelas miniaturas e sua pintura e depois pelo jogo em si, e embora ainda não tenha chegado perto dos luminares da pintura de miniaturas no Brasil (já que caras como o João “Daedalus” Grivot, Fabrício Fay, Luciano “Paintmaker”, Cris e Paulo Cavalcanti pintam bem a ponto de competir com sucesso em competições internacionais) cheguei ao que considero um excelente tabletop e, sem falsa modéstia, tenho tido sucesso nas competições de pintura em que participo nos eventos Brasil afora.

 

Ainda assim, como qualquer outro adepto do hobby penso eu, não me acomodo e tenho sempre tentado melhorar, e foi com esse intuito que me inscrevi em uma iniciativa inédita no Brasil: Um curso de pintura com um verdadeiro mestre espanhol dessa arte, ninguém menos que Fernando Ruiz Ceano.

 

Pra quem não conhece o “maestro” é pintor de renome internacional e além de competir com sucesso em diversos concursos de pintura (com pintores do calibre de Julio Cabos) e atua como pintor freelance para diversas companhias entre elas Art Girona empresa que produz a miniatura que será empregada durante o curso.

O curso, uma iniciativa inédita no Brasil, está sendo organizado pelo já mencionado Fabrício Fay, do blog “Los Figureros”, e vai acontecer em Porto Alegre/RS nos final de semana dos dias cinco e seis de maio de 2012 (aqui o artigo original sobre o curso).

 

Admito mal estar contendo a ansiedade em participar do curso que acredito que vai ser um divisor de águas no que diz respeito não só às minhas habilidades de pintura, mas também para o hobby de pintura de miniaturas no Brasil.

 

Vou tentar fotografar o curso e, ao retornar, escrevo um relatório do evento compartilhando com vocês como foi a experiência.
