Hello there Reader.
Wondering why there haven’t been that many updates here on “The Painting Frog” right? I blame it on Diablo III. In fact I believe a lot of stuff is not getting done all around the world because of Blizzard’s latest game.
I’m still working on hobby stuff, I just hadn’t finished anything worth sharing with you guys here until now but do keep your eyes peeled here as I’m showcasing and reviewing more games and miniatures pretty soon on the blog.
Diablo III aside I did find the time to work on a gift for a very good friend of mine. It should be no secret to you Reader that the social aspect of the hobby plays a very big part in my way of enjoying it. It’s not uncommon for me to go a couple of months without gaming just to host games for my gaming friends (and I get to play wargames about once I month when I go back to my hometown for a couple of days) as it’s the conversation around the gaming table which really drives me to promote this gatherings.
It’s also no secret that over the years I’ve made very good friends in this hobby, guys who started off as gaming partners and now became the closest thing there is to a brother to me without being born from the same mother. One of these people that gamed his way into my tiny circle of friends is Valter.
You might recall I mentioned working on a Black Templars army for a friend, well, he’s the mentioned friend and ever since I started working on his Templars he came up with this fluff that his army would be the personal crusade of the Black Templars supreme commander, High Marshall Helbrecht, and thus I’ve strived to maintain the iconography constant through his models, and more importantly, coherent with his imagery from GW (using the red templar cross with white outline for instance).
It’s been a while since I have finished working on his models but I never fulfilled the promise of painting him a Helbrecht to lead his little plastic men in battle. On one of our last gatherings we were chatting and he mentioned in a year or two he’ll be gaming a lot more against André “Streem” from SP (and also from the “ReLOAD” Vlog) as he’ll move there to continue his studies. It dawned on me then that I’ll not only lose my most frequent gaming partner but will also be miles away from a good and cherished friend.
I don’t want to sound sentimentalist or corny, far from that, but realizing he won’t be around forever and that our lives may take us in different directions (like my buddy “Ultra”Marcos, another cherished friend who lived far and now lives a lot farther from me) made things a tad more urgent to me and I decided to do as I had promised.
I was able to get my hands on a metal Helbrecht through Ebay (I’m trying to steer away from Finecast for as long as I can) and began to work on it last Saturday preparing and assembling the model. If you do some research you’ll see that a lot of people choose to perch the miniature on stairs or an elevated position. It turns out his walking pose looks very awkward when you mount him on a regular base (as he seems to be tilting forward rather than walking towards his enemy) so I followed the example of my betters and made a stair base for him as well.
When it came to painting Helbrecht I tried my best to follow GW’s color scheme for him and am quite pleased with the final result, specially his black cape in which I managed to achieve a subtle highlight before adding some edge highlights. I also liked the marble effect on the base. It’s not perfect yet but I’m under the impression I might be getting somewhere.
Unfortunately I had a varnishing accident with it and some parts ended up being a bit fogged by the matte varnish (matte varnish can be a pain sometimes). I might try to fix that with further applications of paint before presenting Valter with it.
In the end I’m happy with the final result and hope he enjoys this gift. As usual don’t be shy to let me know what you think about it after all that’s the purpose of blogging about the hobby right?

A culpa é do Diablo 3! Sério, se você andava se perguntando onde andam as atualizações do “The Painting Frog” tai a resposta: A culpa é do Diablo 3. E do Valter e do Ismael (não necessariamente nessa ordem).
Fato é que após ter lido na internet que muita gente tirou folga do serviço (ou faltou deliberadamente), tirou férias e matou aula pra jogar Diablo 3 no dia de seu lançamento eu fiquei bem menos culpado por ter dado uma sumida aqui do blog.
Também não é como se eu só estivesse jogando. Na verdade tenho trabalhado em diversas frentes com relação ao conteúdo do blog, mas, até então, não tinha completado nada digno de nota por aqui e, como costumo dizer, se for pra postar bobagem e encher linguiça é melhor não postar nada.
Bom, de volta ao assunto, não deve ser segredo pra você Leitor do blog que o aspecto social do hobby é um fator muito importante pra mim, principalmente se levarmos em conta que frequentemente deixo de jogar para que o pessoal que frequenta minha casa jogue. A reunião social, o papo em volta da mesa de jogo, a troca de experiências é tão importante quanto, ou mais, que rolar dados atirando nos bonequinhos uns dos outros.
Não surpreendentemente cultivei ao longo dos anos no hobby diversas amizades e um dos caras que fez a transição de parceiro de jogo para amigo é o Valter. Se você frequenta o blog deve se lembrar que já o mencionei por aqui algumas vezes, principalmente enquanto pintava o army de Black Templars dele.
O “fluff” (background) do exército do Valter é que suas miniaturas representam a crusada pessoal do comandante supremo dos Templários, o High Marshall Helbrecht, e assim, durante toda a pintura do army tentei incorporar diversos elementos temáticos que faziam essa associação, mas, acabei não pintando um Helbrecht. O Valter chegou a mencionar que queria comprar um mas, na época, prometi a ele que eu lhe daria como presente uma mini do Hellbrecht sem que no entanto jamais tivesse cumprido a promessa.
Pois bem, dia desses estávamos reunidos em casa e conversávamos sobre o jogo quando o Valter comenta que muito em breve jogaria bem mais contra outro bom amigo, o André “Streem” de SP (e do Vlog “ReLOAD”), já que em dois anos pretendia se mudar pra SP pra continuar seus estudos.
Não quero soar sentimentalista ou piegas, mas fiquei meio desconcertado na hora ao perceber que dali a um tempo perderia não só meu mais habitual parceiro de jogo, mas também um bom amigo (o que já aconteceu com outro amigo querido, o “Ultra”Marcos, que já morava longe e acabou morando ainda mais longe) e assim, percebendo que as circunstâncias da vida poderiam nos afastar resolvi correr atrás do prejuízo e cumprir a promessa de pintar um Helbrecht pro Valter.
Acabei conseguindo colocar as mãos em uma miniatura de metal (já que ando evitando ao máximo encarar as minis Finecast por enquanto) e no último sábado comecei a prepará-la para pintura. Enquanto preparava a miniatura percebi que ela não ficaria legal montada diretamente na base. O Helbrecht foi esculpido caminhando em direção ao inimigo mas montado na base ele parece muito mais estar cambaleando bêbado (ou caindo de bêbado) e pra valorizar a peça segui o que tantos outros modelistas já fizeram e montei ele mais alto descendo um lance de escadas.
No que diz respeito à pintura da miniatura propriamente dita tentei seguir o esquema de cores da GW (que é o que o Valter tinha em mente para a miniatura) respeitando a iconografia que já havia utilizado na pintura do exército. Fiquei especialmente satisfeito com o resultado obtido na capa preta (onde obtive pela primeira vez um bom highlight nessa cor) e também gostei do resultado do mármore verde da base (que ainda não está perfeito mas me deu a impressão de estar no caminho certo).
Infelizmente tive um acidente com o verniz fosco (que acabou embaçando algumas partes da peça) ao aplicá-lo a noite na peça (o verniz fosco se comporta mal se aplicado com mais umidade no ar ou com a temperatura mais baixa). Talvez eu tente consertar antes de entregar o presente ao Valter mas, por hora, ela fica como está.
