Da Deepsquig One !

Taking a quick break from my series of Infinity related posts I’m showing you guys today something I’ll start working on soon.

 

One of the great things we have, IMHO, on the Warhammer 40.000 community are Ork players and their armies. As you probably know the Orks are one of the oldest and most emblematic races in the 40K universe and still they were neglected for a very long time during which Ork players had to endure their army’s old rules and the veiled disdain from their opponents. Orks had “gone soft” according to some players back then.

 

The few Ork players out there endured, and like true Orks they dug in and thrived under those harsh conditions. They didn’t have as many shiny new kits as the other armies did, so they looted what they liked and when they couldn’t find something to loot they simply built. And man what gorgeous armies the “meks” can come up with.

 

Well, I happen to have a friend who is an accomplished Mek. His Ork name is “Weeny Legz”, his friends in the real world call him “AJ” but over the web he goes by other names like “Arcuballis” and “Da Goff Rocker”. Unfortunately we don’t get to see each other as often as I’d like to, or even talk, as he’s pretty busy with his day job, but still whenever we meet, or catch up over the phone, it’s always a pleasure to talk to him about our common passions, including this hobby we share, and seeing whatever he’s working on. Seriously, there’s nothing like when he turns to you and says he’s got “something to show” or when you get an email from him with something attached to it.

 

Over the years this guy has created incredible pieces for his armies (in which pretty much every single piece is converted or scratch built like his nurgle army and his squats) and for the gaming table (like an Imperial Train or, more recently, an entire Mordheim table), but, again in my humble opinion, nothing he does can top the work he’s done on his Orks over the years.

 

I was so enthralled by his first pieces (and this particular model in special. I even asked a friend to try and make me one but it turned out too small) that I decided on the spot I was going to make me an Ork army. I even asked him to do some pieces for me under commission but he never got around to doing them, so, in order to satisfy my urge to paint some of his stuff I began to paint his models for him.

 

Older readers might recall “Da Green Monsta” or “Lenny the Squiggoth” which are some of his works that have been painted by me over the last few years and shown here on the blog. Back then when I wrote about painting Lenny I wrote about trying to improve my painting skills so I could work on what I consider his “MASTAHPIECE”. That was back in 2009!!!

 

I should mention here that this model was built in 2006 as the original topic showing its early stages of construction on “Da WAAAGH” forum shows. AJ is a prolific builder but a slow painter I’m afraid to say.

 

So back in 2009 when I came across this incredible scrathcbuilt vehicle still not even primed I kidnapped, or “miniaturenapped”, it along with Lenny, which was given to me by AJ to be painted and then returned. The idea was to paint them together and return them both as a surprise to him as, back then, he didn’t know I had taken his “DEEPSQUIG 1”.

 

Well, the model has sat inside my miniature closet since then, and whenever I open it to pick something from it the Deepsquig looks at me with that frowning face it has reprimanding me for keeping him away from his master this long.

 

Well, I intend to start remedying that situation soon. As the final picture shows I have already primed it. I guess that’s as good a start as any.

Dando um tempo na seqüência de artigos sobre o Infinity eu vim mostrar hoje algo em que pretendo começar a trabalhar em breve.

 

Quantas vezes você viu algo realmente original no hobby? Não muitas acredito eu. Se já é complicado o bastante para a maioria de nós conceber uma lista, escolher os modelos, montá-los e pintá-los o que dirá criar um exército inteiro a partir de um conceito inovador , ou ao menos diferente do que vemos corriqueiramente, e executar inúmeras conversões para dar vida à essa idéia.

 

Bom, ao longo dos meus mais de 10 anos nesse hobby já vi alguns bons trabalhos nesse sentido, armies temáticos como uma força de Kroots Renegados, um army de Wood Elves baseado nos Na’vi do filme Avatar de James Cameron, outro army de Wood Elves repleto de criaturas baseado no filme As Crônicas de Nárnia, um army Eldar baseado em Star Wars.

 

Todos esses armies são exemplos fantásticos do que qualquer jogador pode fazer com uma boa idéia na cabeça, um bom suprimento de bitz e miniaturas e alguma habilidade.

 

Existem bons exemplos de exércitos temáticos construídos por jogadores brasileiros, como os Ninjorks do Sócrates “Peacecraft” ou os Necrons do “Arhurt”, mas um cara sempre me surpreendeu com cada um dos armies que apresentou em torneios ou no Warhammer Brasil: O Antônio Jorge, também conhecido como “Weeny Legz”, “AJ”, “Arcuballis” ou “Da Goff Rocker”.

 

Ao longo dos anos esse cara tem criado armies para o 40K e Fantasy completamente convertidos e com os temas mais variados: Uma 13ª Companhia dos Space Wolves, um army de nurgle liderado pelo famigerado “Maggot”, um army de Squats … a lista é longa, mas, ainda que cada novo trabalho seja sempre primoroso e melhor que o anterior, aos meus olhos, nada que ele tenha feito consegue superar o trabalho do cara com os Orks.

 

Como qualquer Mek que se preze o AJ construiu todos os veículos do seu army, a “OONF” (um acrônimo para “Ork Operashuns Naval Force”), a partir do zero (“scratchbuilding” é o termo em inglês) adotando o tema naval em cada um deles. Um dos mais legais deles é um “zoobmarino” Ork chamado “Deepsquig One”. Fiquei tão encantado com esse modelo na época que pedi a um amigo que tentasse reproduzi-lo para mim, mas devo admitir que a cópia não chegou nem perto do original. Fato é que achei o army tão genial que me empolguei em fazer meu próprio army Ork e embora tenha suplicado ao AJ que fizesse alguns construtos pra mim tenho tido de me contentar em pintar as miniaturas do army dele.

 

Se você acompanha o blog há algum tempo já deve ter visto por aqui alguns modelos construídos por ele e pintados por mim, o “Da Green Monsta” e “Lenny Da Squiggoth”. Quando postei sobre o Lenny mencionei estar praticando para encarar o “Master-Masterpiece” do AJ. Ninguém menos que o já mencionado “Deepsquig One”. O problema é que eu pintei o Lenny em 2009.

 

O AJ tinha me entregue o Lenny para que eu o pintasse por ocasião do Spoon of Gork naquele mesmo ano e eu me aproveitei dele ter tido de ir embora mais cedo do evento (e deixado seus modelos com o Silvio) e na mão grande trouxe junto o “Deepsquig One” (que já estava pronto desde meados de 2006). É óbvio que nunca me passou pela cabeça ficar com ele pra mim! A idéia era pintá-lo junto com o Lenny e devolver os dois pro AJ fazendo uma surpresa.

 

Bom… é óbvio que o plano não deu certo já que o DS1 (cansei de escrever ‘Deepsquig One”) ainda mora aqui dentro do meu armário de miniaturas e me lança olhares acusadores sempre que abro o armário rpa pegar alguma coisa lá dentro, porém, chega de enrolação, assim que completar o trabalho nos starters de Infinity (que estão quase prontos) encaro o DS1 e acabo com essa lenga lenga.

 

Pra provar o intento até passei primer no tanque (ok, já tem um tempinho… o bicho tá até sujo, mas vale a intenção não é?).

And so this is Christmas!

Hello there reader.

 

No I haven’t forgotten the blog or the few readers I’ve charmed out there. Just haven’t painted much and that’s it.

 

A good while ago, back when everybody was preparing to attend the EIRPG held in São Paulo earlier this year I teased a couple of friends saying they wouldn’t be able to paint all the models of the ork army which belonged to one of them. In order to spice things up and give them a goal, a sort of prize to aim their efforts at, I promised I’d paint one of the armie’s models if they painted all the required points in time for the tournament. And so they did.

 

In short that’s how I ended up with an Ork Weirdboy to paint since July. I know I’ve been complaining for a while about rusty painting skills and I will not dally on that subject again, suffice to say the skills are still rusty but I had to deliver on the promise made.

 

Here’s how it turned out:

 

 

 

 

 

When I finished I wasn’t really satisfied with how the model turned out and in the spirit of the season I came up with the idea of crafting them a couple of Christmas gifts.

 

I knew Streem, as he’s known on the forums, and Fabin, another web nickname, had already purchased and split between them a Black Reach box but I couldn’t pass on the chance of painting the nice captain and warboss models from that box so I  had a go at converting the models.

And that’s it for 2008! It’s been a great year overall and even though I’ve painted little I definitely have the painting bug for 2009. So for now I part leaving you wishes of a very merry Christmas and an incredibly happy new year. Hope to see you all around here next year!

Não vou fazer “mea culpa” dessa vez. As coisas são como são… a “vida real” sempre acaba nos ocupando mais do que gostaríamos e no tempo em que poderia estar pintando raramente tenho me sentido motivado para fazê-lo.

 

Sinto que ando estagnado no que diz respeito às habilidades de pintura o que acaba me tirando muito da vontade de pintar.

 

Era meio nesse clima de desânimo com o hobby que eu andava sendo encarado por uma miniatura que têm morado aqui em casa desde o EIRPG. Eu havia prometido ao Fabin do fórum Warhammerbrasil pintar uma das miniaturas do army dele se ele e o Streem conseguissem pintar todas as miniaturas que o Fabin usaria no army pro torneio do EIRPG. Como eles conseguiram o Weirdboy do Fábio voltou comigo de São Paulo, mas desde então tinha ficado intocado na minha gaveta de projetos por fazer.

 

Com o final do ano chegando rápido decidi que não dava pra adiar mais e mesmo enferrujado nos pincéis aventurei-me a pintar o Weirboy com resultados não tão satisfatórios, afinal de contas eu tenho senso crítico e estou no hobby a tempo bastante pra saber o que é e o que não é legal.

 

Chateado com o jeito que o Weirboy tinha ficado e achando que ambos, Fabio e André, mereciam uma recompensa pela amizade que compartilham (afinal de contas ajudar um amigo a pintar uma horda de orks não é qualquer um que faz) e pelo interesse em difundir o hobby, decidi fazer um presente de natal pra cada um deles.

 

Decidi pintar as miniaturas do capitão e do Warboss da caixa “Assault on Black Reach”, mas como sabia que os dois tinham rachado uma caixa dessas e dividido o conteúdo uma conversão se fazia necessária.

 

Bom as fotos das miniaturas com as quais os presenteei ilustram a atualização de hoje mais acima e falam por si só. Fiquei tão satisfeito com o resultado do Warboss e capitão marine que decidi voltar a pintar muito em breve. Só falta um bom evento pra me motivar.

 

E no mais é isso para o ano de 2008. Foi um ano bastante legal para o Painting Frog que trocou de casa e ainda assim encerra o ano com mais de 5.000 acessos (não acredita? Confira a última caixinha da coluna da direita chamada “Blog Stats”) o que me deixa muito satisfeito e motivado para continuar trazendo novidades do hobby por aqui.

 

2009 promete ser revolucionário para o hobby no Brasil. Eventos e iniciativas por parte da comunidade prometem movimentar a já, em minha opinião, revigorada comunidade que com iniciativas como a Liga dos 500 em São Paulo começa a se organizar e dar sinais de franca atividade para o ano vindouro.

 

Que venha 2009! Um feliz natal e próspero ano novo repleto de saúde e paz para todos vocês leitores é o sincero desejo deste hobbista!
