Shadows of Brimstone – Board game review.

 

Sitting at the saloon, the sheriff of the small town known as “New Dawn” kept an eye on the whisky glass on the table while holding in his right hand the old Peacemaker. He had acquired the habit of releasing the drum, rolling it with his thumb and pulling it back inside with a twist of the hand and holstering the gun, all in a quick fluid movement. He’d do that over and over again while still keeping an eye on the cup of whisky.

 

He had managed to kick off the drinking habit years earlier, before New Dawn but after the episode that went down in history as the “Red Hook Massacre”, but he still enjoyed having a full glass on the table, like an old friend with whom you lose intimacy, but still quite can’t get away from. His thoughts, whatever they were, were interrupted by shouting coming from the street.

Sentado no saloon o xerife da pequena cidade de “New Dawn” contemplava o copo de uísque sobre a mesa enquanto segurava em sua mão direita o velho Peacemaker. Ele havia adquirido o hábito de liberar o tambor e girá-lo com o polegar para então com um movimento rápido recolhê-lo e reinserir a arma em seu coldre, fazendo e refazendo o movimento enquanto olhava para o copo de uísque.

 

Ele conseguira se desvencilhar do hábito da bebida anos antes, antes de “New Dawn” mas depois do episódio que ficou conhecido como “O Massacre de Red Hook”, mas gostava de ter o copo cheio ali sobre a mesa, como um velho amigo com o qual se perde a intimidade mas de quem não se consegue afastar completamente. Seus pensamentos, quaisquer que fossem, foram interrompidos por gritos que vinham da rua.

Ever since I got deeper into the board gaming hobby (as if I needed any other hobbies. I blame Thiago and Monty for that in case my wife is reading this) I knew this next step was coming, I just didn’t know it would happen so fast: introducing board games to my family.

 

Back in the day me and my wife used to play board games. Yes, we were still stuck with the very same board games that entertained generations before us, but, at that time, that was the pinnacle of gaming as I understood it. We used to play the Brazilian version of “Pictionary” with our friends when we were dating and after getting married “Scrabble” kept us company in many a long night when power outages prevented us from watching TV or sleeping, however, as anything that’s new, the new age of boardgaming here at home belongs to my daughters.

“Paiê! Vamos jogar o jogo do trem?”

 

Olá Leitor!

 

Desde que eu abracei o hobby dos jogos de tabuleiro (board games) com um pouco mais de entusiasmo (eu atribuo a culpa ao Thiago Penteado, ao Leonardo Montagna pro caso da minha esposa um dia ler isso aqui), o inevitável passo seguinte foi apresentar esse universo à minha família, que para minha surpresa e, claro, felicidade, agarrou o novo hobby com unhas e dentes.

 

Eu já jogava jogos de tabuleiro ocasionalmente com minha esposa, o “Imagem e Ação” sendo um firme favorito nos encontros com os amigos durante os anos de namoro, e depois o “Scrabble” sendo um grande parceiro quando faltava luz na época conhecida como “os anos de solidão” pela qual passamos juntos, contudo, a nova era dos boards aqui em casa pertence, como tudo que é novo, às minhas filhas.

 Se você chegou até aqui parabéns e seja bem vindo! Mas você não deveria estar lendo isso aqui ainda… pelo menos não por enquanto! Já estava a algum tempo um tanto cansado do formato de blog do MSN Spaces onde o “The Painting Frog” nasceu em sua 1ª versão.

Atendendo a recomendação do bom amigo Silvio do “Diário de um Roleplayer” resolvi experimentar o WordPress e ver se me habituo a ele como ferramenta para manter um blog sobre o fantástico hobby de pintar miniaturas. Por enquanto não vão rolar galerias nem nada do tipo por aqui… tenciono usar este espaço para manter um registro de um projeto “secreto” (o quão secreto ele ira continuar depois que for postado aqui eu não sei) que decidi tocar a algum tempo… mais noticias sobre ele em breve.Assim por hora fica o meu muito obrigado a todo mundo que tem lido o “The Painting Frog” ao longo dos últimos dois anos e, umavez mais, o meu seja bem vindo a este novo espaço.

If you made your way here congratulations and welcome! Rest assured this happened completely by chance as it wasn’t my intentention to have visitors here, yet!

Over the last few months I’ve grown bored of the blog format offered by the MSN Spaces, where “The Painting Frog” was born a while ago, and started looking for alternatives.Silvio, from the “Roleplayer Journal” blog (“Diário de um Roleplayer” ) suggested I gave WordPress a try, so here I am.

For now I’ll keep a low profile here, as I get used to the tools ate my disposal, so I’ll try to use this spot as a way to cronicle the development of my “secret project” as it starts to take shape (I wonder if it’ll be kept secret for long)… more on that soon.So thanks a lot if you’ve been reading “The Painting Frog” for a while and welcome if you’re a new reader. I intend to have this place up and running soon so stay tuned for what’s coming…. in the meantime, if you haven’t done so yet, please take the time to browse “The Painting Frog” in its “original version”. There’s a few model galleries there and some tutorials and articles on painting I’ve written over the course of the last two years!
